Last week, while I was at DVCon, I got to sit down with Mark Milligan and Thomas Li from Springsoft. They wanted to talk to me about their new platform on which the Verdi product is built. Verdi is their simulation display and debug product. This time around everything has changed except the name. The original product was Debussy, then their second generation was Verdi, but they did not introduce a new composer for this upgrade, even though it sounds like a ground-up rebuild.

The product comes with a new GUI built on Qt. This is a tiled interfaces compared to the window-based older product. Language support has been extended to Verilog-2009, and the database is 30% smaller than it used to be. They have also introduced multi-threading to speed up the reading of a database.

To me, the most important part of this upgrade was something they announced a few days before and that is the adoption of the Verdi Interoperable Apps (VIA) platform by Synopsys. This allows protocol information extracted from verification IP to be used in the display and debug of complex communications protocols.
