There is an old saying that goes something like: the great thing about standards is that there are plenty to choose from. At times it appears that way with new interfaces being created for everything related to computers and communications. Non Volatile Memory (NVM) has started to be used instead of disk drives in many systems and it promises to be the wave of the future. Disk drives and the interfaces associated with them (such as SATA) were designed to optimize access from a spinning platter, but these do not apply to memory that can be accesses in a random manner. Thus accessing NVM as if it were a disk drive is well – wrong. So a new standard has been created (March 2011) – NVM Express or NVMe, and Cadence has released their IP to support it.
The controller used in the Cadence NVM Express solution supports advanced command management, data tiering and hardware command acceleration. The IP is highly configurable, allowing it to target the broad scope of applications possible with NVM Express. The included driver firmware offers an easy interface to the system firmware. The solution also includes a verification and test environment spanning from the PCI Express interface to the internal bus fabric.
