PLX samples new family of PCIe 3.0 switches

PLX Technology is sampling six new PCI Express Gen 3 switches, the PLX Express Lane family, ranging from 12 to 48 lanes for high-speed chip-to-chip and backplane interconnection applications.
Built on a 40nm process, PLX ExpressLane adheres to the PCI Express 3.0 spec, which offers 8 Gbps per lane in both transmit and receive directions. The high-end 48-lange switches can handle up to 96 GBps of bandwidth. The company announced working Gen3 silicon in February.
PLX PCIe Gen 3 switches include software-driven on-chip hardware debug and monitoring features, such as measurement of the SerDes eye inside the device, PCIe packet generation to saturate x16 Gen 3 port, injection of error in live traffic, error logging and port utilization count.
The switches also provide PCIe and traffic monitoring for easy launch of PCIe systems that would otherwise require days of expensive lab set-up and test and measurement equipment.

PLX Gen 3 switches are fully backwards compatible to PCIe Gen 2 and Gen 1.
The new family's performance range is designed to meet the needs of ever-higher bandwidth demands in cloud computing and virtualization systems as well as in communications systems.
The PLX ExpressLane PCIe Gen 3 switches are available in 19x19mm (PEX8712, PEX8716 and PEX8724) or 27x27mm (PEX8732, PEX8747 and PEX8748) packaging.
Pricing and availability
Volume pricing ranges from $30 to $95 apiece. The devices are sampling today; production is slated for mid-2011.
