A new embedded triple-level-cell (TLC) flash eMMC controller offers extreme reliability in smart phone and tablet applications. The DB3610 from DensBits offers more than 10,000 P/E cycles on 2Xnm and 1Xnm TLC devices, as well as sequential read/write performance of up to 95 MB/s and 75 MB/s and random R/W performance of up to 4,000 IOPS and 1,100 IOPS (4 KB), respectively.
The controller features the company’s Memory Modem technology that comprises three jointly designed proprietary solutions:
"As the roadmap for NAND flash memory technology slows down considerably in the coming years, TLC-based solutions will be imperative to drive further cost reductions and expand the market for smart phones, tablets, and other embedded applications," says Gregory Wong, founder and principal analyst with Forward Insights. "The potential for a TLC solution to replace multi-level-cell (MLC) without incurring reliability and performance degradation is a significant milestone."

- ECC with no error floor and near-optimal error correction for each code realization for both hard and soft inputs
- DSP, which optimizes R/W performance by boosting TLC program performance by more than 60%
- Two-level flash management layer, consisting of an ECC/DSP-matched lower level to further increase reliability and a hybrid page/block upper-level management to boost performance
