Samsung delivers 20% smaller mobile DRAM
Kristin Lewotsky5/21/2012 4:48 PM EDT
A new 4-Gb LPDDR2 memory produced using 20-nm technology targets mobile devices such as large-screen tablets and smart phones. At 0.8-mm thick, the 2-GB mobile DRAM from Samsung Electronics Co. stacks four 4-Gb LPDDR2 chips in a single LPDDR2 package. The device also can process data at up to 1,066 Mb/s while spending the same amount of power as that of a previous 30-nm-class 2-GB package. This new package is approximately 20% thinner than 2-GB packages that stack four 30-nm-class, 4-Gb chips, making them a good fit for ultra-slim-form-factor devices.
Shipments of 4-Gb LPDDR2 will account for approximately 13% of total mobile DRAM shipments in 2012, according to IHS iSuppli. The market research firm expects the share to increase to 49% in 2013 and 63% in 2014, with 4-Gb mobile DRAM becoming the mainstream chip in the mobile DRAM market by the end of 2013.
