Samsung rolls out 16-GB DDR4 modules
Kristin Lewotsky7/23/2012 3:21 PM EDT
New 16-GB DDR4 RDIMMs target enterprise server systems. Samsung Electronics Co. has begun sampling the modules, which use 30-nm-class process technology, to major CPU and controller makers. Operating at 1.2 V, the DDR4 modules will reduce power consumption by 40% compared to Samsung’s DDR3 modules that process data at 1.35 V.
Samsung says it is looking to expand its market base of DDR4 modules, slated to begin volume production next year. Also in 2013, the company plans to roll out 20-nm-class-based DDR4 DRAM products offering densities up to 32 GB.
DDR4 technology boasts the highest performance among memory products available for computing systems, which by next year will reach twice the current 1,600 Mb/s of DDR3-based modules, according to Samsung.
