LONDON — Taiwan foundry United Microelectronics Corp. has started processing wafers for MicroEmissive Displays Group plc, a vendor of low-power microdisplays using organic light emitting polymers, MED said Monday (Mar. 21).

The wafers are the basis for MED's polymer OLED microdisplays, which are aimed at consumer devices such as viewfinders for digital cameras, night viewers and mobile phones.

"This is the first step in MED's plan to start volume production for our customers," said Bill Campbell, chief executive officer of MED (Edinburgh, Scotland).

No comment was made on when or how MED expects to complete the manufacture of the displays, what particular resolution, size or customer the company is targeting with these first displays.

"We are happy to cooperate with MED to deliver the process technology needed to help bring their promising microdisplay ICs to market," said Henry Liu, head of the new business development group at UMC, in the same statement.
