SAN JOSE, Calif. — Raising the stakes in the marketplace, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. said that it has begun mass producing an 8-gigabit NAND flash-memory device, based on 60-nm technology.

The high-density, multi-level-cell (MLC) device is believed to be late to the marketplace by a quarter, according to one analyst.

Mass production of the new 8-Gbit chip allows Samsung to offer an 8-gigabyte (GB) solution by vertically stacking two 4-GB packages, each package carrying a vertical stack of four 8-Gbit dies. The 8-GB NAND which can store 2,000 MP3 files or 225 minutes of DVD-quality video, is expected to be available in the third quarter of 2006.

Samsung plans to further utilize its 8-Gbit NAND flash memory chip in its MLC NAND technology, called moviNAND, which will enable a 2-GB solution.

The newest technology advancement brings 25 percent higher manufacturing productivity over the previous 70-nm design technology.
