Hillsboro, Ore.—Future Technology Devices International Ltd. (FTDI) has launched the VDrive2, a Universal Serial Bus (USB) flash disk interface module based on its Vinculum integrated USB host controller.

The module adds USB flash disk connectivity to a broad range of industrial and commercial products that do not have a USB interface. Typical usage includes data capture and transfer, diagnostic analysis and software updates.

Only four signal lines, 5-V supply and ground are required for connection, speeding system design. The VDrive2 is packaged in a snap-in plastic enclosure with a bi-color LED, providing power and status indication along with a single USB type 'A' socket.

FTDI is also offering the VMusic2 module based on the VDrive2. The VMusic2 module enables designers to add USB flash disk interfacing to products and allows these designs to play back MP3 and other popular digital music formats directly from a USB flash disk. Applications for VMusic2 include operator instruction, multi-lingual safety announcements and music playback.

Pricing: VDRIVE2 is $24.50; VMUSIC2, $37.50 per unit.
