Image processing SoC from NEC supports high-end camera functionality
Julien HappichFebruary 2010
The CE 151 SoC allows mobile phones to output full-HD (1080-pixel) video stream and still image data up to 13 megapixels received by the CMOS sensor.
The Camera Engine Software Platform is designed for re-usability with a rich and easy-to-use command-layer application-programming interface (API).
Backward compatibility with previous NEC Electronics’ CE series supports a smooth transition for existing customers to reach a new height in camera performance and functionality in mobile phones.
The new SoC features an improved noise-reduction function that minimizes distortion caused by lenses and offers the latest generation 1.1 micron sensors to record still images and video frames.
Power consumption has been lowered by approximately 25 percent over previous devices from the company. It supports SpeedTags technology to eliminate shutter lag as well as an improved image-stabilizing function.
Delivered in a 8x8mm 181-pin plastic FBGA package, the SoC controls optical hardware functions, optical correction functions, all the image processing and memory interfacing. It operates from a 1.2V core voltage, taking 1.8V, 2.7V and 2.85V I/Os. Samples are available now.
