Advanced Analogic Technologies (AnalogicTech) has rolled out yet another product of its Modular BCD (biCMOS-DMOS) process in the AAT1185 power-management IC. The single-output, step-down controller targets 12V power adapters for a broad range of application including wireless LAN access points, notebook computers, set-top boxes, and DSL and cable modems. Although targeted at a 12V input, the IC supports a broad 6V to 24V input range.

The AAT1185 supports both lower-cost less efficient non-synchronous power-supply designs and more-efficient synchronous designs. For non synchronous designs you augment the IC with a Schottky diode on the load-side switch. For synchronous designs, the IC offers high- and low-side output pins that can drive N-Channel MOSFETs.

The IC leverages a constant-frequency, voltage-mode control topology and switches at 490 kHz. The output voltage can be set to values between 0.8V and 5.5V. The device can source 10A of output current and shutdown current is less than 30 μA. The IC features internal soft start capability, and programmable over-current and over-protection circuits. Available in a 14-pin TSOPJW package, the AAT1185 costs $0.79 (1000).
