Applications processor enhances content viewing on mobile devices
Dallas, Tex. — Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) has introduced a new OMAP 3 chip that changes the way consumers view and share content on their mobile handsets, by bringing HD camcorder functionality and full-page web browsing to mobile devices. TI said the new OMAP3440 is the industry's first ARM Cortex A8-based applications processor to bring full high-definition (HD) camcorder functionality to mobile devices, giving users the ability to record video, and enjoy new applications enabled by the large displays in the latest Smartphones and Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs).

The new chip leverages TI's high-performance IVA multimedia accelerator to support 720p HD video record and playback. With integrated camcorder capabilities, consumers will be able to record HD video on-the-go for playback on an HD television at home or to post and share with friends from a mobile device.

The OMAP3440 also makes it possible for consumers to view content in full-screen mode and enjoy content in any format. At the heart of the OMAP3440 is a superscalar ARM Cortex-A8 running at 800 MHz, providing the performance headroom to enhance applications that take advantage of larger displays in MIDs.

TI is also introducing a new low-cost development kit for OMAP-based Smartphones and MIDs. TI has teamed with LogicPD to launch the OMAP3430-based Zoom Mobile Development Kit (MDK), which can be used with a variety of operating systems. The development board includes TI's OMAP3430 applications processor, TI's OMAP-VoxTM cellular modem, TI's wireless connectivity technology, a 3-megapixel camera sensor, a 3.7-inch VGA TFT touchscreen display, and TV output.

In addition, TI is expanding its Open Source Linux offering with an OMAP3430 board support package.

TI is demonstrating OMAP 3-enabled devices at the Mobile World Congress booth, Hall 8, 8A84.

Availability: The OMAP3430 solution is sampling, and the OMAP3440 processor will sample by second quarter 2008. The Zoom MDK is available in limited quantities and will be broadly available in April 2008.
