Cypress Semiconductor announced its PSOC 5 (programmable system on chip) microcontroller family in the fall of 2009 at Embedded Systems Conference Boston.  and began offering engineering samples this summer.

The device, fabricated in 130nm CMOS, features an ARM Cortex M3 microprocessor core that runs up to 80MHz. The device also features programmable digital and analog fabric around the core that allow designers to create custom VHDL or Verilog components, according to Bobby Jania, Cypress product marketing manager.

We talked with Jania recently (see video nearby) to get his perspective on the PSOC 5 and potential applications, including motor-controlled baby strollers. Yes, you read that right.
