Wisair unveils single-chip Wireless USB solution

Wisair's WSR601 handles both host and device Wireless USB applications and implements a coexistence technology that allows it to operate in close proximity to Bluetooth and 802.11 radios.

Based on WiMedia and Certified Wireless USB standards, the WSR601 integrates UWB PHY (including RF), MAC and Wireless USB subsystems. The chip's combination of high-performance and low-power make it suitable for a wide range of Wireless USB applications, including battery-powered, portable devices.

The WSR601 uses a two-wire coexistence scheme to mitigate interference with Bluetooth and 802.11 radios. Its -70dBm/MHz out-of-band emission means it can support Japanese regulatory requirements without a dedicated external filter. An integrated detect-and-avoid technology allows the WSR601 to coexist with other wireless technologies sharing the same spectrum, such as WiMAX.

Implemented in digital CMOS, the WSR601 supports HWA, DWA and Native device protocols. It offers designers SDIO and USB interfaces, isochronous data transfer, and cable and numeric association models.

For mobile devices, the WSR601 provides power-save modes and an average power consumption of 385 mW at 100 Mbps throughput. Its PHY data rates are 480Mbps at 8 meters and 200 Mbps at 20 meters.

Wisair provides Host Wire Adapter (HWA) reference designs in several form factors.

The Wireless USB PCI-e half mini card targets laptops with internal PCI-e card slots. The card implements HWA though a USB interface, and features a minimal number of external components, to reach a <$15 total BOM cost.

For digital still cameras, camcorders, printers, and external disk drives, Wisair's reference designs employ USB and SDIO interfaces so designers can implement both native WUSB and Device Wire Adapter (DWA) designs

The WSR601 has been shipped to several customers in sample quantities. Production volumes will be available in Q4 2007. More information is available at www.wisair.com/products/chipset/wsr601/.
