(Internet Protocol TV) Also called "TV over IP" and "Internet TV," IPTV refers to the delivery of scheduled and video-on-demand (VOD) TV programs and movies over the Internet. By the end of 2009, the telephone companies had nearly 40 million IPTV subscribers worldwide. See Internet TV.
IP Triple Play
All Web and e-mail traffic travels in IP packets, and voice increasingly uses IP (see VoIP). By adding IPTV, a data-voice-video "triple play" service can be offered over the same network infrastructure. See triple play.
Like a Web Page
IP-based TV is delivered like a Web page. When a subscriber wants to view a TV channel, that channel is routed to the user just like every other resource on the Internet. In contrast, a cable TV user receives hundreds of channels over the cable simultaneously and tunes in to the one desired. See Internet TV, Internet Protocol, streaming video and IP on Everything.
