SAN JOSE, Calif. — The members of the PC/104 Embedded Consortium have fully adopted the EPIC specification 2.0, so that the number of embedded computing standards managed by the Consortium is up to five, all of which incorporate PC/104 expansion as a core element of their design.

The 4.5” x 6.5” (115 x 165mm) format for single board computers was originally developed through a combined technical effort from five U.S. companies: WinSystems, VersaLogic, Octagon Systems, Micro/sys, and Ampro but has now been adopted by other manufacturers in North America, Europe, and Asia.

The standard incorporates PC/104-Plus expansion to provide users with a convenient way of customizing their systems by adding on any of hundreds of PC/104 expansion modules available from over 100 manufacturers worldwide.

Jeff Milde, Executive Director of the PC/104 Embedded Consortium, said, "The adoption of the EPIC 2.0 specification by the PC/104 Embedded Consortium signals to the worldwide embedded systems user community that this standard will be supported by manufacturers for the long term. System builders can design their new products around the EPIC standard with confidence that it will support their product lifecycle needs."

The official Epic 2.0 specification is available for users to download.
