Physics is not the hurdle for scaling CMOS By Peter Clarke The minimum energy needed to perform the basic computing operation-the switching of a 0 to a 1-can be expressed as E(min) = (ln2)kT, where T represents absolute temperature, k is Boltzmann's constant and ln2 is the natural log of 2. This limit was first reported more than 50 years ago by computer pioneer John von Neumann, although apparently there is no record of the reasoning underlying von Neumann's assertion [1].
