The evolving LM design
Models of four Lunar Module (LM) concepts, starting with the original from 1962 (left) and to the final version. Weight reduction and astronaut requirements drove the design. Note that the number of legs was reduced to four, heavy windows were removed and replaced with high-visibility triangular windows and the round forward hatch was replaced with a rectangular hatch to ease egress in bulky space suits with heavy backpacks.
