Fairly new to the industry, I am stuck between making a choice between which of these two is more important or more valued and what are the qualities you would require to be successful in either of the two and which of these offers more development prospects.
Can any one help????

Applications engineer will give you a broader experience. You need to undersatnd the product, understand the customer's application, figure out a solution, make it work and demonstrate it. Usually, you often face difficulties ti beat your competittors with an available but inferior product where you have to be very innovative.
Th experience gained in applications can easily market your skill around.
For IC design engineer, it is good for gain experience in a particular area to build a base to move forward.
Hop eit helps.
P.S. I worked as a design, apps, systems and eng. manager.

I worked as a design engineer for 15 years before I became an applications engineer. The three most important things you need as an applications engineer are:
1. Confidence. You can only get that with successful designs under your belt. The engineers you call on will not respect you without some time spent "paying your dues". Even then some won't respect you.
2. An outward facing personality. You have to like interfacing and interacting with people. The prototypical engineer does not fit this requirement. If you are introverted; do not become an apps eng.
3. You have to get into change. I say this because being an apps eng requires you to become a sales person and that is a BIG change!! All engineers should be adept to change but not all can handle this one.
I really enjoyed my time as an apps eng. If your fit the requirements I listed above you, most likely, will too.
