Our sister publication MD+DI just published a short list of predictions for the medical electronics sector.

See http://www.mddionline.com/article/blue-skies-or-clouds-ahead-medtech-industry-experts-make-their-2012-predictions

Got your finger on the medical pulse? Share your prognosis here.

Here's my three predictions: 1.) More complex regulatory and legislative moves in the US 2) More industry interest in Asia and Europe, especially China 3) A continued difficult funding climate

OK, here are a few--some wild and whacky--just to get your juices flowing:

The first artificial pancreas approved.

Following GE unit, Medtronic division moves to China.

An integrated analog device enables ultrasound peripheral for the iPhone.

Home health care wins reimbursement from a major CMO.

Implant adopts secure Wi-Fi.

$1,000 DNA sequencer ships.

What's your take?

Hi Rick -
Thanks for getting things kicked off on 2012 predictions. My Christmas blog will hit in a day or two.

From your list, I'd suggest that the first approval of an artificial pancreas is further out in time, although I'm certainly hopeful. Freescale has an employee using the Dexcom CGM and Insulet Omnipod... Separately these work together to accomplish the result - with her interaction of course. Two body worn patches and two external controllers along with a cell phone is a lot to cart around. That said, she would be the first to tell you that this technology as-is has absolutely transformed her life!

I could see more than a few medical OEM's moving to China. I love Mindray. They will see building competition, but they've got a significant lead and great momentum.

Implant adopts secure WiFi?? Great attention getter, but I'd be more than a little concerned about power consumption. Gainspan may be able to take a run at that one.

One on your list that's near and dear to my heart relates to remote patient monitoring - which is what I think you mean with 'home health care'. It would be a great year if a major CMO or CMS were to support reimbursement. Several major medical OEM's and their supply base would be 'Happy' over that one!

Happy New Year folks!

I'd like to see a lot more coverage of medical electronics on EE Times (or more links to MD+DI, unless they're there already and I'm just missing them).
