Renting/leasing T&M equipment: desperation or salvation?

The companies who provide test & measurement equipment for rent or lease or even sell refurbished units seem to have a good business model. Do you, users and potential users of their services think they provide a useful or essential service. Is there are thing they should be looking to do better? have you had any bad experiences?

I've dealt with a couple of these companies and have found them to be very professional and take very good care care of their equipment.
I've also been able to purchase used equipment from them; if you do regular business with them they'll usually give you a break on prices, especially if the equipment is a generation old or so. Don't expect to get anything of current generation, however.
Only downside I've seen is the high rental prices - for instance, renting a ~$100k scope costs about $10k a month. Does not make sense unless for renting very short duration.

These rental test equipment vendors are essential for providing expensive equipment for a short duration project, typically troubleshooting a particularly difficult problem. They are also useful for pieces of equipment that are only needed periodically and would sit on the shelf for long periods between use so would not justify a capital expenditure.
