Smiley-- if you are prototyping at your desk. Consider the shapeoko from Inventables, it is a 2.5D CNC router. Paired with the online CAD interface... it is pretty useful.

Any if 3D printing, makerbots are still cheap. Maybe prntrbot. 

If more in the machining center, mill, lathe, etc.. go with mach3 or LinuxCNC as support for any machine, if it doesnt come with software already.
