Bell Labs' inventions had a fundamental impact on mankind. No other organization will be able to replicate that. There is something to be said of the environment created there so science could flourish. Although many other companies have R&D organizations, they are meant to affect the companies bottom line.

Bell Labs is no longer funded by a giant monopoly that controlled all telecommunications in the U.S. No money no research.
