I really am not qualified to comment on MIPS management. But one explanation comes to mind. MIPS sales people did not have a proper strategy of how to integrate Chipidea's product portfolio and look for synergy. Since all of Chipidea's sales team left after the sale. There was not much understanding about how to push their products. Yes as a analog customer anybody is likely to add more specs on analog IP. It implies more customer meetings and more technical meetings. Its not like selling a embedded processor. Professor Jose Franca is a briliiant analog designer who put Portugal on the worlds map for analog design. All I can say is as usual some non technical brainless manager lost the like of a brilliant person like Dr. Franca. Loosing Chipideas analog guys - who were hand trained by Franca and his colleagues is the only thing managers can do. Sometimes I think fewer the managers the better off we are. This so called MIPS managers neither understand processor architecture - analog is a far cry. Good luck to Franca and his guys I hope they find a better outlet for their skillset.

Very interesting article, with references from inside the companies by people who know the real story. It is also interesting to go back and re-read original articles written on the merger back in 2007 to see how close (or far) off the mark some commentary was. eg. http://seekingalpha.com/article/45910-mips-technologies-to-gain-from-analog-ip-acquisition The story inspires a renewed respect for the companies who do successfully grow by merging and aquiring.

This is an interesting account of MIPS mishandling the acquisition, but how do you explain selling a company that was doing 5M a quarter in revenue for 22M? Isn't this less he 1X? Maybe this is a question that is better asked by the MIPS investors.
