There's hope on the horizon! I have a patent-pending on a 3-conductor, downward-compatible (makes correct connections between conventional unbalanced and new balanced versions) "RCA" connectors. I'm now actively seeking manufacturers interested in licensing (contact me at email@example.com). Balancing an unbalanced output adds only a few pennies to the BOM - balancing an input (properly, that is) adds less than $2. To me, it's an insult to see RCA connectors on "audiophile" gear that costs $2,000+.
