I think Maxim is converging on the smart metering and AMR/AMI space. Introducing this PLC device is just one step of the many Maxim has been taking since last few months. Fully agree with DocDivakar

I wonder if this is from the acquisition of Teridian, 78M6618 product line. Maxim bought Teridian about 4 months ago for $300M. The 6618 product supports various current sensor technologies including current transformers (CT), resistive Shunts and Rogowski coils. Looks like Maxim may be offering a lite version of this product. I doubt if the offering is a new spin of the TINI-interface capable chip that Maxim inherited from its Dallas Semi acquisition. Power line communication market will see a huge boom in the near future with the introduction of smart grid for the efficient energy use. Maxim should be trying to compete with Marvel semiconductor which acquired a start-up company working on PLC technology.

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems.
