Is it question of time compression - using ext IP produces the assumption that NO work will now be needed on that function? Reality is that time is needed to characterise the new IP, at least to run it safely in a test harness wherein future suspected bugs can be verified / hunted down. Using own IP is often out of the question due to complexity anyway.
