why not, its already working well in Japan. NFC based payment for public transportation is widely used, why not implementing it to mobile sets. However i dont think apple would accept such solution where they wont be in control of origin. Dealing with banks, offices etc. not apple style

so next gen android devices and iPhones will have NXP chips to enable NFC for credit card payments?

Well the next iPhone is said to have NFC built-in for wireless syncing with notebook and micropayments. If this is true all other smartphone manufacturers will follow. So it entirely depends on Apple whether next year NFC market will open up.

To say that Andy Weir's The Martian is an exploration of math, Mars, and feces is a slight simplification. I doubt that the author would have any complaints, though.
