Certainly better solution than separate DSP and FPGA. Also the same development environment makes life much easier for designers.

The progress of the basestation to keep pace with the smart phones is a big cost for the wireless carriers. They have to make the right choices for their investment dollars. It's good to see that Freescale is producing some good solutions for this space.

With the rise of smartphones and other wireless Internet devices using 4G air interfaces, DSPs in basestations are becoming increasingly important. Besides TI and Freescale, other chip makers like LSI Corp., Fujitsu and NEC are also competing, but for the highest speed protocols such as LTE-Advanced and WiMax, however, it looks like TI and Freescale will be leading the pack.

It is nice to see Freescale has this new processor that can compete with FPGA and the giant TI. Processor is crucially important to the new telecom system with so much digital signal processing!
