re: ISuppli sounds alarm on chip inventories

How can this issue be addressed? My interpretation of what IHS iSuppli analysts are saying is not that chip firms need to cut production immediately. But I do think they are saying this is something to keep an eye on. They say there should be no issue as long as the chip market achieves modest growth of 5.6 percent. But if there is a hiccup in demand, having this much inventory hanging around could be bad news. As others have suggested in this string, I'm sure there are certain product areas where the situation is more serious than others.

"Would be good if it was define in a clear picture as to which products or chips inventory is high" Excellent point but this is one is free...and that's what you get unless you walk the extra mile my advise check Digitimes and DRAMexchange - the beauty about memorey pricing is that it is transparent - also keep track of what TSMC is saying and publishing The more detailed stuff, such as the product-by-product inventory level breakdown you seek, is likely contained in the report, which is for sale through the company's website.

Semi Stocks continue at Multi year highs ignoring the Chip Inventory number; unless this number jumps closer to 90 days (3 months) I do not expect a severe correction. The key is how are the big Distis such as Avnet and Arrow managing their inventory ?

What is the next big thing that should be driving sales is my question. Hard to see much short term that will help drive demand....

@Semicon guru- IHS iSuppli has a new report for sale on chip inventory. Some of the high-level findings the company made public in an announcement that was the basis of this article. The more detailed stuff, such as the product-by-product inventory level breakdown you seek, is likely contained in the report, which is for sale through the company's website.

Would be good if it was define in a clear picture as to which products or chips inventory is high as some products are shortage due to demands from Smart Phone and TabletPC. If the inventories have reached 84 days as per iSuppli then the stocks of these companies should not have risen 30%~40% in 2011. Also, the channel guys that are holding on to the inventories are putting themselves at risk as Q1 is always the low tide of the season.

This is the way that IHS iSuppli phrased it. I'm not sure anyone is implying that high inventories caused the last downturn. Obviously the global financial meltdown was the chief culprit there. Still, the fact that chip firms were holding a lot of inventory at the time could not have helped. Certainly (knock on wood) no one expects a situation of that magnitude to arise now. But I interpret what IHS iSuppli says as this: the high inventory levels will be no big deal if the semiconductor industry grows at a modest 5.6%, but if we hit a bump in the road that leads to lower growth or worse, the holding of all that inventory is going to be a serious problem.

"Inventory was at its highest level since the second quarter of 2008—right before the onset of the last semiconductor downturn—when DOI reached 84 days, the firm said." Are you seriously implying the last semiconductor downturn was inflicted by semi industry / high inventory level?
