An extraordinary achievement. As the size of the device shrinks, how do the power consumption and the area required for the solar panel portion scale? I suppose one advantage of this application is that the duty cycle can be cut to conserve energy (update every 30 minutes or hour) while still providing far better information than is available today.

This entire project is impressive, especially in regards to the planned implantation in the eye and being able to recharge the battery without external connections.

5 nW, that is quite impressive. I wonder if this qualifies as nanotechnology as the power consumption has reached the nano scale.

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems.
