To @randerson, I disagree...FPGAs have been replacing ASICs in the last few years and will continue to do so with the ASIC design costs approaching 50M per chip...once I was a trade-show with my company's ASIC and many of booth visitors have asked me what exactly I was selling ASIC or FPGA?! (the demo board had one ASIC we were markting and 8 FPGAs around it to flow data packets properly, Altera was very grateful for that demo ;-)...Kris

What is the "low end" of the 28 nm market? Seems to me almost any new, bleeding edge technology will be too expensive for the low end.

Altera always had the reputation of putting more focus on the communications sector, meanwhile ZTE and Huawei have been building tons of base stations and other telecom infrastructure; Altera may be outpacing Xilinx in China these days.

Unlike the CPU processor market, FPGA is actually have better comptetors and this is actually good for the OEM's. Better products and lesser prices would be the benefit out of competetion

Why not ASICs? That is what they mention most often as the target...

Both Altera and Xilinx are well positioned. I don't see them growing at the expense of ASICs, but probably for other devices.

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems.
