While you couldn't made calls, the 3g data service was running. I was able to talk with my wife via skype on her iphone, and via mobile Wimax router+ ipod touch on my side.

Is all the wimax links have the back bone network with the micro wave radios. It will be interesting to see how wimax is much better than the 3G and LTE to provide better connections during earthquake.

Yes, true. So the explanation might be as simple as which system lost electrical power to a smaller percentage of its base stations.

@Frank, I agree with you, why exactly WiMax fared better than the 3G networks ? If we get answer for this then we can compare those technologies better.

It would be valuable to know why the WiMAX network fared much better than the 3G network. Without that understanding, it is difficult to draw conclusions about the robustness of one vs. the other.

The backbone of any wireless system is underground optical fibers or copper wires. If an earthquake hits the wires, the wireless system goes down. If this particular incidents that the article is referring is using a mesh network, the wireless system will stay up as long as there is power. Any more information will definitely help to graph the rebostness of WiMax technology.
