Carl Icahn may have painted himself into a corner and needs to unload his nearly 15% share of MENT all at once. When he arrived, I figured that his plan was to 'scare up' the value of his meagre holdings but failed; then when in that hole, he kept digging.

Icahn is simply interested in loading Mentor up with debt. I can only see a disaster if he takes over Mentor. I don't know what you are referring to when you claim Xilinx lacks ethics. Regardless, I don't care about your personal issues.
