Smart phone process, this is one special name given by the TSMC to attract more smart phone processor makers to use their foundry. Are there is really some thing special to smart phone chipset like integrating lot of RF into the chipset.
Any chance of Intel offering its 22 nm process as foundry service exclusively to Apple for iPhone / iPads ?
This will put Apple comfortably ahead of generic ARM users who TSMC seems to be courting. BTW at yesterday's TSMC symposium that Mark has reported, there was a surprise speaker - Warren East, the CEO of ARM holdings.
A TSMC - ARM combine may undermine Apple's lead and shut Intel out of Mobiles forever.
So Intel serving as Apple's foundry for Mobile chips may be a win - win for both
Hmmm! A combination of power and performance may be interesting. If this is done well, the TSMC will get the big orders from all the key players in tablet and smartphone! Apple is smart to get TSMC involved.
thank you Warren, if it is TSV then perhaps this is making sense, otherwise it is just some marketing gimmick...as far as I remember (I worked with TSMC for 10 years or so) they always had a high performance process, low power process, and a generic process that combines the two...I guess you can rename them now as: PC process, cell phone process and smartphone process ;-)...Kris
TSV stacking maybe? Actually the naming and roadmap placement make it seem more like splitting the baby - part Low Power, Part High Performance. Which, to me, fits a previous article here in EETimes where consumer electronics CPU performance was generally viewed as too anemic; improved performance at the cost of some power savings looked promising.
