There is a total embargo on Iran: All exports and reexports of US-origin goods and technology to Iran are prohibited, except for food and medicine. The prohibition includes exports of foreign-made products which contain more than 10% US-origin components or technology. Thus, if a product made in China is based on a US design, the export to Iran of that Chinese made but US designed product requires a license from the US government, and few if any licenses are granted.
US trade controls are expansive and include many countries other than Iran or other embargoed countries like Syria and Cuba. For example, last December, PPG was fined $3.75 million because its Chinese subsidiary sold indurtrial paint to a Chinese company knowing that its Chinese customer intended to export the paint to a nuclear plant in Pakistan.
The answer is very simple. Based on my knowledge of people from that part of the world; the issue is that anyone who do some "special work" for our government or Iran's; Think they can expand their business/income beyond what was agreed in secret. what they don't realise is that once their usefullness is over; then another part of same government goes to check the books!
Iranian business people could easily buy those lap tops in open market in Dubai or direct from china, legally.
So the real story behind it, is that No american/iranian businessman is completely safe unless eighter work/cooperate with security services all the time; or don't work with them AT all(which is the best thing).
But underground world of "above the law" is very exciting and profitable to some people!
and remember that Iranians do buy computers from china/taiwan much cheaper than from china-to usa- to dubi-to iran!
So there is a lot hidden under this story!
Are those special laptop? Almost all commercial laptops are all Made In China. There is no restriction in China to export ANYTHING to Iran, maybe except nuclear warhead. Why someone have to ship them from US?
It is not so ridiculous when you realize the government of Iran would actively use this equipment to try and kill U.S. military forces and is attempting to build and deploy weapons to harm U.S. interests in the Middle East. Missile systems require advanced computer technology to work.
Knowingly doing these things are offensive. How these people get the courage to make money by risking their lives,integrity, personality and many more things which are related to themselves and their kith,kin. All their future of living on this earth will be with lot of mental pain and torture
I'm glad stories like these are being posted. Hopefully, internationally, countries will work together to prevent illegal sale of any kind of electronic devices or components. It is very important for companies and governments to work together. In addition, I wonder what happens to get the parts back (as well as the parts left over). The irony of it all is that many of the components were probably manufactured globally and labor to put things together is also probably less expensive: I wonder why these U.S. Citizens -- aware of the laws thought to do everything from the US.
