You are correct, the use of barometric pressure sensors to determine altitude is well known, but making one cheap and low power enough for mobile devices what all the MEMS makers are aiming for, and this is one that is gaining design wins in that space. Thanks.

Still curious why this is news. I think the industry has done this long ago. Maybe I am wrong. The application to smartphone is the innovation i think here

this is pretty high tech use of the MEMS sensor. I am sure smartphones will for sure integrate it to add one other extra feature to build apps on.
