Check out the low power radios from Toumaz (www.toumaz.com). Targeted mainly at short range healthcare / BAN applications in the lower ISM bands, extremely low current and supply voltage. Full disclosure - I worked there between 2003 and 2005 when they were just getting started on the technology. Did some very cool wireless digital audio stuff inside a hearing aid!

Add a vibration and/or thermal generator IC, microphone and speaker (rechargable dongle needed?) so I don't have to take my phone out of my pocket. :)

I had a casio pager watch and loved it. Will the G force show my caller ID from my phone in my pocket? If yes I will take one now. (Still pissed about the killing of the pager watch.) But it will not stop me from buying a ULP bluetooth watch...but it has to do the above right out of the box.

Sensor Networks is the area still under research and maturity. But this ULP RF has got enormous potential of getting placed virtually in any electronic device. Wherever a connector is there, the device is looking for an RF transceiver. Beyond this there are still a lot many unexplored possibilities.

ULP RF has a lot of areas to grow; home control and home security are just some examples. The challenge is whether the industry will choose the same protocol and, like Jay said, the interoperability. Zigbee has been selected. Yet, the lack of interoperability has been keeping it from popular. I think the recent news has indicated that IP might be chosen for upper layer protocol for Zigbee based communication. It is a good step. However, there might be concern over the power consumption because once TCP/IP is used, there will be more computation. It effectively drains the battery. I like to hear more information. I personally believe the new products coming out from ULP RF will make our lives easier.

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems.
