Toshiba may be interested in developing parallel-transfer, fault-tolerant HDDs which use a 2D Reed-Solomon error-correction scheme as described at www.tinyurl.com/2drshdds.

HDD market is ever lasting market. It is fine to do research in this segment. One day low cost high speed solid state memory might over take HDD technology.

Yeah it is ironic that Toshiba, the king of NAND, still supports HDD. Not very promotional for SSDs.

It is surprising to see that Toshiba is investing more into HDD research. I believe in next 5 years all the HDD will be probably replaced by the SSD in major personal computing devices.

SSD could eventually take over the market, but I don't see that happening in the near future. The cost per terabyte would have to get close to parity and HDD has many more oppotunities to grow their capacity.

What do they say about 'Moore' solid state drive capacity and what do they say about price ? 5 years I think HDD will be in the same place as floppy disks.. Museum - with the 8 inch hard disk - collectors item.
