Will it support all the bandwidth needed for a smarthome? 11 story condo complex? Office building? How does its BW hold up when other standards use BW allocated in free BW zones?

I took a quick look at the Gateway white paper, and I have to say that it looks like they are on a good path. Specifying SOAP and REST interfaces should make it very easy for non-embedded programmers to access these networks. I am going to have to bookmark this for future projects. Thanks much. Larry M.

The general ZigBee Alliance links in the story are a great place to start, les00000. What are you looking for?

Zigbee Alliance now moving very close towards smart grid. Gateway spec will be handy.

Looks like a good step forward for ZigBee. Could become very interesting with the coexistence issues with WiFi and Bluetooth as Luis pointed out.

This has opened so many opportunities, using this feature one can make web servers running in ZigBee coverage area this was information sharing will become very easy even without wifi. But in the mean time if bluetooth also comes with a gateway specification it will be preferred protocol for mobile devices as it is already having more deployment.

Now that smart grid and home automation is happening it is very important that a Gateway spec. is built for ZigBee devices. Has anyone heard of a mobile phone with ZigBee? I think at home automation, ZigBee will have to have a place in the mobile phones. Will there be problems in bluetooth - Wifi - ZigBee coexistance? I bet. It's my impression that Bluetooth owns much of the market that ZigBee intents to step on. Will ZigBee ever make it... what do you think?

Just went in to the next page: http://zigbee.org/Products/ZigBeeCertifiedProgram.aspx and could confirm that indeed the labs are running the necessary tests for a product to certify it for ZigBee.

NEXT UPCOMING BROADCAST

What are the engineering and design challenges in creating successful IoT devices? These devices are usually small, resource-constrained electronics designed to sense, collect, send, and/or interpret data. Some of the devices need to be smart enough to act upon data in real time, 24/7. Are the design challenges the same as with embedded systems, but with a little developer- and IT-skills added in? What do engineers need to know? Rick Merritt talks with two experts about the tools and best options for designing IoT devices in 2016. Specifically the guests will discuss sensors, security, and lessons from IoT deployments.
