Cost reduction is one driver here, but the shift in emphasis to general lighting is also going to open up some opportunities in terms of packaging. I can see someone coming up with flat sheets or other large-scale form factors to adapt LEDs better to innovative lighting applications. Larry M.

I read an article earlier and I was surprised LED chips are still made with contact lithography.
