"...they are independent, so that if GPS should turn off, Galileo will continue to operate...", who will pay for both the services at the same time just for the fear that one might not work sometime.

The Iridium constellation is still fully functional and in use. It is expected to remain so until after the Iridium NEXT constellation is deployed, with launches beginning in 2015.

A very informative article without much of the technical jargon. With multiple GPS systems now going to become available we will also need the GPS receivers to support both the US and European systems. A huge market opportunity ! This initiative reminds me of Motorola's ambitious IRIDIUM project. Does anybody has any idea about how many of its satellites are functional?

That's a lot of GPS-satellite traffic up there: the US GPS constellation, Glonass, and soon Galileo. Could potentially be some nasty physical collisions, as well as RF spectrum ones!

Glad you both liked Peter's prose. Plenty of other good articles where this one came from. Please see the special digital edition issue "After the shuttle, the stars." Here's the link: http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/cmp/eetimes_military_20110921/#/1

I agree with you - nice and easy to follow. Hope they will follow up with sequels.

Very nice article Peter. You've provided some good information in a quick read. This will be interesting to watch as the satellite deployment happens.

What are the engineering and design challenges in creating successful IoT devices? These devices are usually small, resource-constrained electronics designed to sense, collect, send, and/or interpret data. Some of the devices need to be smart enough to act upon data in real time, 24/7. Specifically the guests will discuss sensors, security, and lessons from IoT deployments.
