PS- While teardowns might not necessarly benefit the consumer, I would argue that they are of great interest to people who work in and/or follow the electronics industry, who are always curious about what components are inside hot new gadgets.

@Neo1- just to clarify, UBM TechInsights has not yet done a teardown of the iPhone 4S. This BoM estimate is based on the features of the phone as compared with the original iPhone 4. Teardowns will likely be done in force starting when the product is available, Oct. 14.

Both investors and consumers are disappointed with the iPhone 4S features. They were expecting more from iPhone 4S, but this phone doesnt have any extraordinary features compared to its prevoius versions. I guess this is good chance for Android phone makers to give tough competition to Apple.

These day the tear downs news seems to have taken on a life of their own. Pray, what value it adds to the consumer. This crude endeavor appears to have been spawned as a result of lack of technical analysis and good news coverage. These tear downs are the laziest jobs I have ever come across which tell absolutely nothing of value.

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems.
