With the last sentence of the "Perspective is Everything" article: "There are jobs, and there is hope." I would like to know what you are smoking so that I can get some.

It's getting a lot harder to keep learning when the cost of that higher education is rising at three times the rate of pay increases for engineers and they have only a third as many years to pay for it.

Solyndra management betraying our trusts and disgrace to America. Corporate greed is contagious and bad for America. More than 1,000 souls lost their jobs and hopes. "Forgive but never forget their names." John F. Kennedy

Irwin Feerst was famous for making all these same points in the late 1970's and early 1980's when unemployment was even higher for engineers.

The simple reason is differences in international competition. Engineers work in a globablized industy and compete directly against engineers in Asia, who work crazy hours at lower pay. The cafeteria worker is in the services industry which is local only and there is no non-US based competition. I've met waiters who make more than PhDs. Either this situation will reverse, or the US will lose whatever engineering capability is left....

Another point that has not been made is engineers are the fuel for more jobs. Don't hire engineers...then the 10x to 30x jobs created down stream manufacturing, test engineering do not get created. Lately these tend to be created oversees now the designs jobs are going as well. when will the government and general population get this and support engineering employment so as to employ all the other people that need jobs just as bad as engineers.

all this talk of bus drivers reminds me of a Joke (reality) what do you say when the government throws you under the bus?

I recall sending out many resumes and cover letters upon graduation. I think I only got two bites, but one of them landed me my first engineering job. I was fortunate because I had not gotten an internship while I was in school. I think getting an internship is really the way to go if you can. I believe the internationalization will level out as wages continue to rise in developing countries. Also, engineering continues to expand into new and different fields. There are more widely varied opportunities now than there were twenty years ago. This is good.

Yes, skilled people are hard to find. Your company is limiting itself if it insists on people relocating to Iowa. These days communications are pretty much free. It is really, really easy to engage people remotely in other states or even other countries. Many, many companies now work that way.

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems. Signal integrity sage Ransom Stephens will explain how PAM4 differs from NRZ and what to expect in design, measurement, and signal analysis.
