It's getting a lot harder to keep learning when the cost of that higher education is rising at three times the rate of pay increases for engineers and they have only a third as many years to pay for it.

The simple reason is differences in international competition.
Engineers work in a globablized industy and compete directly against engineers in Asia, who work crazy hours at lower pay.
The cafeteria worker is in the services industry which is local only and there is no non-US based competition. I've met waiters who make more than PhDs.
Either this situation will reverse, or the US will lose whatever engineering capability is left....
Another point that has not been made is engineers are the fuel for more jobs.
Don't hire engineers...then the 10x to 30x jobs created down stream manufacturing, test engineering do not get created.
Lately these tend to be created oversees now the designs jobs are going as well.

I recall sending out many resumes and cover letters upon graduation. I think I only got two bites, but one of them landed me my first engineering job. I was fortunate because I had not gotten an internship while I was in school. I think getting an internship is really the way to go if you can.
I believe the internationalization will level out as wages continue to rise in developing countries. Also, engineering continues to expand into new and different fields. There are more widely varied opportunities now than there were twenty years ago. This is good.

These days communications are pretty much free. It is really, really easy to engage people remotely in other states or even other countries.
