The automakers insist on proprietary closed systems. Android is available it works. they should support placing a 10" android tablet in center console to do all the cars mapping and audio needs.

In all honesty, given the licensing complexity that MeeGo offered, automotive OEM and Tier1's are much better off without it, Tizen should follow the same rules...using open source software (along with the demands of its licensing models) in an environment where differentiation and innovation are key for business success does not make much sense.

INVENTORS - DO NOT TRUST INTEL!!! I invented a CPU cooler - 3 times better than best - better than water. Intel have major CPU cooling problems - "Intel's microprocessors were generating so much heat that they were melting" (iht.com) - try to talk to them - they send my communications to my competitor & will not talk to me. Winners of major 'Corporate Social Responsibility' awardS!!! Huh!!!! When did RICO get repealed?" INVENTORS - DO NOT TRUST INTEL!!! BTW, I have the evidence - my competitor gave it to me. BBTW, I am prepared to apologise to Intel if; • They can show that the actions were those of a single individual within the company, but acting outside corporate policy, and: • They gain redress on my behalf.

If somebody looks long term, it is going to the mobile all the way - as your communication device in home, office, car, hotel and so on. It is alos going to be your remote control for TV, home Theater and all those smart gadgets you will have in your smart home. So any technology that support such generality is going to remain alive and everything else will go down the drain.

Will Intel be consistence enough to work on the new platform if they can give up Meego which they have invested for long time. It is a lose-lose situation to both Intel and its customers. However, any kind of investment has to bare a certain level of risk.

I don't know that the car "amp" needs to play well with phones, but there does need to be an interface with the vehicle that does, and in turn, it can and should handle the "amp" and anything else appropriate (screen for GPS, etc.) given everything phones are capable of now. This decision from intel merely emphasizes the point that as designers, we need to be ready for drastic changes when we're dealing with something that is not relatively mature.

The increasing role that phones play in car electronics was probably most significant factor. Once you get used to pulling your phone out of your pocket and popping it into a car dock, everything else seems archaic. You have a complete communication and entertainment ecosystem that follows you from home to car to work to other car. The fact that 48% of smart phones are Android means that your car "amp" has to play well will phones.

Drones are, in essence, flying autonomous vehicles. Pros and cons surrounding drones today might well foreshadow the debate over the development of self-driving cars. In the context of a strongly regulated aviation industry, "self-flying" drones pose a fresh challenge. How safe is it to fly drones in different environments? Should drones be required for visual line of sight – as are piloted airplanes? Join EE Times' Junko Yoshida as she moderates a panel of drone experts.
