Indeed they come in late to a crowded field, don't forget about Intel's Linux flavor for mobile, Tizen. So looks like many are trying to compete with their Linux distro in the embedded market. Ubuntu is strong at servers and Desktop I think has some popularity... Perhaps having the same OS at these 3 nodes will enable killer functionality?!

Coming late may not be the stumbling block. Ubuntu was late to the PC market anyway. It gains popularity pretty quick although I think CentOS and Redhat Enterprise is more popular in server space.
