I could be wrong (it happens) but I don't think SiOnyx ever talked about applications for solar. I think they've been developing this for semiconductor industry apps.

Weren't they originally trying to do solar power? Or was that just typical start-up talk I am remembering?

Well SiOnyx has been in the Silicon 60 for some time and announced the raising of some money in October 2010 see http://eetimes.com/electronics-news/4209815/
