This would be a much more interesting article if a comparison to Standrd DSP oriented processors was included in enough detail to show where standard DSPs would be better than FPGAs and where FPGAs would be better than standard DSPs. Anyone at Xilinx up to the challenge? maybe a series of Point Counterpoints with Xilinx vs DSP vendors for a set of different applications? That would be much more interesting to me...

The processing of still images with 25-30 frames per second of large size video frames (resolution of 1024x1024 pixels)is still not possible with Digital Signal Processors.

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems.
