Is it just me or was this much ado about nothing? Who were the winners and losers? While Tessera "won" the patents expired, what is the real effect of the lawsuit? Is there going to be a damages followup suit now or? I sometimes wonder if companies try to use the threat of a court battle to encourage quick settlements..
Since the patents have already expired and apparently only really covered a relatively small period of time, with no damages yet determined, it is not too surprising that the Supreme Court refused to consider the case. Of course, now the "damages trial" could still be considered if the results are appealed.
What are the engineering and design challenges in creating successful IoT devices? These devices are usually small, resource-constrained electronics designed to sense, collect, send, and/or interpret data. Some of the devices need to be smart enough to act upon data in real time, 24/7. Are the design challenges the same as with embedded systems, but with a little developer- and IT-skills added in? What do engineers need to know? Rick Merritt talks with two experts about the tools and best options for designing IoT devices in 2016. Specifically the guests will discuss sensors, security, and lessons from IoT deployments.
